Building Teams that Can Navigate the AI Revolution

Don’t panic.
Well, maybe some intense concern is called for.
No one knows what the artificial intelligence revolution will mean for business. While waiting for the dust to settle can be a good tactic for some new technology, this time, it is not advised. As we have discussed in a previous post, AI is likely to transcend Moore’s Law.
Leaders must have a team or teams charged with closely monitoring, researching, experimenting, and making recommendations about artificial intelligence governance and implementation.
This is a Pathfinder team.
An individual Pathfinder has a combination of temperament and values that fall into five main categories of Approach, Outlook, Motivation, Adversity Response, and Relationships.
Building a Pathfinder Team
Is a Pathfinder team made up of a bunch of individual Pathfinders? It could be, but that’s not necessary. A good leader has the ability to bring people together and help them develop a Pathfinder culture.
How?
Here are some practical tips:
Create a Clear Charter
The AI landscape is one of constant change, making it essential for teams to be comfortable with experimentation. Encourage a ‘test and learn’ approach where failures are seen as stepping stones to innovation. This mindset helps teams to iterate quickly and find novel solutions to complex problems.
At the same time, you need to provide boundaries; if their scope is seen as too broad, it will be impossible to have any focus. If there is a need for more room for exploration, it’s better to start smaller and let the team return and ask for more scope.
Create Measurements of Success Together
How will the team know if they are successful? It is a question that every team needs to know. With AI being so new, it’s tough to create Key Performance Indicators for this type of team.
Work with team members and figure out which measures are most helpful. Review them regularly and see if they still make sense and revise as necessary.
Get Different Perspectives on the Team
AI is going to touch many different parts of any given company. Ensure your team comprises individuals from various backgrounds, disciplines, and skill sets. This diversity fosters creative solutions and enables your team to approach AI challenges from different angles.
Demand Cross Group/Business Unit Collaboration and Communication
This must be a firm expectation from the beginning. Your AI team has to play nice with all parts of the company.
AI is not just a tech issue; it intersects with various business domains. Promote interdisciplinary collaboration where tech experts work alongside marketing, finance, HR, and other departments. This ensures a holistic approach to AI challenges and solutions.
Encourage open dialogues, regular check-ins, and collaborative platforms where ideas can be shared freely. This ensures everyone is aligned and can contribute effectively to AI initiatives.
Build In Ethical Awareness and Responsibility
As AI becomes more integral to business processes, ethical considerations must be at the forefront. Train your team to recognize and address ethical implications of AI, such as bias in algorithms or privacy concerns. An ethically aware team is better equipped to handle AI responsibly and sustainably.
Encourage Agility and Flexibility
In an AI-driven world, change is the only constant. Cultivating an agile mindset in your team is vital. This involves being flexible in approach, quick to adapt to new information, and resilient in the face of setbacks. Agile teams can pivot quickly in response to evolving AI trends and market demands.
As the manager of this team, you have to encourage these pivots and provide support when needed.
Be Clear on the Business Strategy
Your AI team should have a firm understanding of the organization’s or division’s business strategy. That will help the team focus on areas that might have the most promise and encourage members to think of ways AI can enhance work, improve customer experience, save money, etc. This strategic integration fosters a deeper appreciation and more effective use of AI.
Prioritize Emotional Intelligence (EQ)
While AI excels at processing data, it lacks the nuances of human emotion and judgment. Cultivating high EQ in your team ensures they can fill these gaps, bringing empathy, ethical judgment, and interpersonal skills to the table.
Lead by Example
As a leader, your approach sets the tone for your team. Demonstrate a willingness to adapt, and embody the values of continuous learning and ethical responsibility. Your example will inspire and guide your team in the right direction.
Building a Pathfinder team capable of adapting and innovating in an AI-driven world requires a multifaceted approach. It’s about nurturing a culture of continuous learning, diversity, experimentation, and ethical awareness. By focusing on these elements, leaders can ensure their teams not only adapt to the AI revolution but also play a pivotal role in shaping it. The future belongs to those who are prepared to embrace and leverage the transformative power of AI, and it starts with building the right team.
